April 26 is the 11th anniversary of the previously unpublished obituary of sport-minded Manhasset native, John Jerome Gary, who was born on Jan. 21, 1946 at 54 Elderfields Road, Village of Flower Hill, Manhasset, and delivered by his father, Dr. Walter J. Gary, MD, to be one of the few live births at that time in the Village of Flower Hill. John grew up and loved Manhasset, as a young boy, who was an “Altar Service Boy” at St. Mary’s Church, Manhasset, and also excelled in sports, as PBC (Police Boys Club), Manhasset, for football, and enjoyed exploring Manhasset woods and Leeds Pond with his brothers. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and later St. Mary’s Boy’s High School, where he received trophies in track. John went on to graduate from both Notre Dame University and New York University Dental School, to ultimately receive a DDS degree (Doctor of Dental Surgery). John was both in private practice and later retired from the U.S. Army, with the rank of a colonel, where he performed prosthetic work on soldiers, as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist. Dr. John J. Gary, DDS continued to work even after retiring from the Army and moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he worked in the VA Hospital. From there, John taught dentistry at the college of Dentistry, University of Tennessee in Memphis. John joins his father and mother in heaven, Dr. Walter J. Gary, MD and Mrs. Mary E. Gary along with his older brother, Walter. Surviving family members are his brothers, Thomas Gerard Gary, Village of Flower Hill, Manhasset, Reverend Paul Quintus Gary, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Peter Quartus Gary, of Honolulu, Hawaii. Also surviving John is his spouse, Patricia Gary, of El Paso, Texas, and children, Kevin Gary and Megan Gary. Burial was at For Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, Texas.
