Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson and the Garden City Police Department, along with staff of the Garden City Recreation Department, conducted a community program titled “National Night Out” at the Garden City Community Park during the afternoon, and evening hours of Aug. 2. “National Night Out” is a program conducted in communities throughout the country where local police departments and their communities form a partnership to make their town/village a safer place to live by encouraging the community to:
• Report crime or suspicious activity as soon as it happens.
• Take necessary steps to prevent crime.
• Join and/or support local community organizations that address crime and quality of life issues.
• Discuss with your family what to do in case of emergencies.
• Help make children aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
• Advise them what to do when approached by strangers.

During this program Detective Pedone, the department’s Youth Officer, greeted numerous residents at various locations within the park and discussed issues that affect the safety and welfare of the community. Jackson stated this event is an effective way for citizens to interact with the police department in a positive environment where they can discuss their security and safety concerns, as well as other quality of life issues.
