Gardeners from all over Long Island entered their veggies in the recent Summer Harvest Competition at Hicks Nurseries in Westbury. Vegetable victories were awarded in a number of unique categories including Funniest Looking Vegetable, Most Beautiful Bouquet and Most Uncommon Vegetable, among others.
All children who entered the competition received a certificate of participation. Peter Notarnicola of Massapequa won first place for heaviest tomato, tipping the scale at 3 pounds and 7.4 ounces. Third place went to Linda Levy of Levittown, whose tomato weighed in at 2 pounds and 6.25 ounces. Levy also took home second place for the most uncommon vegetable category with her green zebra tomato. Philip Grombliniak of Levittown took home third place in the funniest looking vegetable category.
