Congregants of Christ Lutheran Church recently gathered in honor of the 90th anniversary of the church, which was founded in 1926 on Thanksgiving Day. According to Pastor Martin Nale, the event was to not only preserve the history, but to celebrate faith as well.
“It’s the 90th anniversary and we’re doing different things to celebrate,” he said. “The church originally began at St. John’s of Jerusalem Cemetery, that’s the older church building that was used by a number of different church groups.”
Christ Lutheran also used the building at St. John’s until it moved to its present location at 3384 Island Rd., Wantagh. The event last weekend took place after worship, when members went to St. John’s and had a brief dedication service and prayer at the church.
“Unfortunately, we can’t go in and worship due to the renovations [new roof], but we were still able to honor the history,” said Nale. “The former members of the church are buried in the cemetery and there’s a lot of history there that we are trying to preserve.”
Christ Lutheran Church currently has about 500 members, some of which are related to those who originally founded the church. For more information, call 516-221-3286 or visit www.clcwantagh.org.
