This summer, the Manorhaven Red Devils Swim team ran its first annual “Swim-a-Thon.” The event was a huge success, raising more than $2,500 for the Port Washington Chapter of CancerCare.
Coaches Victoria Sanger, Olivia Moss and Gordon Shaub calculated that the team collectively swam more than 2,000 laps. The top Red Devil swimmer kicked his way through 200 laps, while many other swimmers clocked in at more than 100 laps.
The Red Devils Swim team consists of girls and boys ranging from 5 to 16 years old. For the second year in a row, the team went undefeated in swimming meets, easily winning their division title. Part of the success of this summer program is the fact that it is run and coached by a former Red Devils team member. The team is an amazing family experience and certainly a lot of fun.
Since many of the coaches and swim team members have also been involved with the Port Washington Chapter of CancerCare, fundraising for the worthy organization was a perfect fit.
“On behalf of the Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of CancerCare, thank you to the entire Red Devils swim team for their fantastic feats of swimming to raise monies for CancerCare,” said 40-year member of CancerCare Barbara Faticone. “It is very heartwarming to see these beautiful young children helping others. And, bravo on their Division win!”
As the team moves into Division 2 next year, they are hopeful that both the team and the second annual “Swim-a-Thon” will enjoy continued success. The Red Devils always welcome new swimmers to the team. Anyone interested can inquire at Manorhaven Pool for tryout details.
